Jennie Weaving    Jennie Slick: Master Weaver

Jennie is currently accepting commissions for Burntwater, Ganado Red, Germantown, Wide Ruins and Two Grey Hills weavings at $100 per square foot using Burnham's size 1 yarns and at $150 per square foot using Burnham's finer size 2 yarns.  Rugs intended for use on the floor, like one that that Jennie is weaving in the picture above are woven using size 1.  Jennie reserves the use of the finer yarns to smaller detailed pieces intended for wall display.  The yarn to be used will be determined prior to the pricing of your commission. Please contact Mary Walker via email at mary.walker@weavinginbeauty.com or phone at 602-370-2875 to arrange a conference with Jennie to discuss your requirements.  Fifty percent of the total commission is due at the start of weaving and the remainder is due when the weaving is completed.  Buyer pays shipping and insurance costs. All funds go directly to Jennie, and no portion is retained by Weaving in Beauty.   Jennie weaves approximately one square foot per day when she is able to weave full time.  She will estimate your delivery date based on her current backlog.  As of October 20, 2006 Jennie has 120 days of backlog, and is able to start new projects in March of 2007

About Jennie......

Jennie Slick is a master Navajo weaver whose work has appeared in American Indian Textiles  by Gregory Schaaf, The Weaver’s Way by Carter and Dodie Allen and Southwestern Indian Weaving by Mark Bahti.  Jennie is born for the Coyote Pass People (her maternal clan) and born to the Red Running into Water People (her paternal clan).  She has been weaving since she was 16 years old and is at least a third generation weaver.  She has been weaving professionally to support her family since 1979.

Jennie’s favorite rug pattern is Burntwater.  “That’s where my Dad comes from, Burntwater, Arizona”.   She also weaves Germantown, Ganado Red. Wide Ruins, Two Grey Hills, Chief Blanket, Storm Pattern and Burnham patterns.  “I enjoy weaving.”, Jennie says with a smile in her voice.   “ I really enjoy weaving.    It gives me a lot of freedom to think my way through a pattern and enjoy creating something. “  Jennie once explained the weaving process to trader Bruce Burnham this way: “When I start weaving, I submit myself to the rug, and the rug just brings me through”.

Jennie demonstrated weaving at R.B. Burnham Trading Co. in Sanders, AZ in the late 1990’s and began teaching occasional weaving classes.  She was since taught for the High Country Fiber Arts Retreat in Heber, AZ, Taos Art School, and Weaving in Beauty.  Her weaving classes have taken her to Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Montana, Idaho and Florida.  In 2004, she was Artist in Residence at Warner Southern College in Lake Wales, Florida.  “ I don’t mind teaching people, and I don’t mind sharing because I don’t think you’re supposed to be stingy with it”, she says.  “You’re supposed to teach them how to weave.  I guess that’s where your blessings come from.”

Jennie lives in Querino Canyon, AZ and her time is divided between her weaving schedule, her teaching schedule and her job as a caregiver for Navajo elders, including her mother, Anna Ashley.  Almost all of her weavings are pre-sold commission pieces for private clients.  Jennie’s has five children, three daughters and two sons.  She has thirteen grandchildren.  Jennie has taught several of her family members to weave, but none have pursued weaving professionally yet.

Jennie’s goal is to bring the harmony of Navajo weaving and culture to as many people as possible through her classes and rugs.
